Project Description

DWG is providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and fire alarm engineering services for the expansion of Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital, supporting one of the region’s most significant healthcare growth initiatives. The project expands the existing 116,000-square-foot hospital with a 200,000-square-foot expansion, including a new adjacent ground-up 90,000-square-foot medical office building to serve Berkeley County’s rapidly growing population better. The hospital gains 50 inpatient beds and 21 additional emergency department treatment rooms, as well as state-of-the-art spaces for MRI, CT, interventional radiology, a compounding pharmacy, four new operating rooms, a mother-baby unit, a dialysis unit, and expanded laboratory, sterile processing, and pre-op/PACU departments. To power this increased capacity, DWG is also engineering a significant upgrade to the hospital’s central energy plant. The design includes the addition of three 400-ton chillers, three 400-ton cooling towers, a new boiler, and an expanded hydronic distribution system. The renovated areas feature chilled water air handling units with adiabatic humidifiers and single-duct hot water terminal units, delivering efficient and reliable environmental control. This expansion supports Roper St. Francis Healthcare’s mission to bring advanced, compassionate care closer to home for the residents of Berkeley County.
